Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine was born and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam, Jazmine's mother, is a former backing singer for Philadelphia International Records. At the age of five her father was named to the position of Philadelphia's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. The family then moved into this historical building. The 2005 Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts graduates and a major in singing. Sullivan began singing in the school's chorus as a contralto and then she joined the adult chorus a couple of years afterwards. The exposure Sullivan had to secular music was not extensive at first "I had solos singing in churches and a person wanted me to be a part of a gospel label when I was 11, but I was not ready to do that," she recalls. "Then McDonald's offered a competition for children in major cities. In the end, I got an opportunity to perform the Grace of God on Showtime Apollo. The crowd was enthusiastic." She performed alongside Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday celebration at 13. Sullivan aged 15 at the time, signed her first contract with Jive Records. As a teenager the label signed her to Jive Records. They recorded her entire album in Jive Records. However, it was not released. Sullivan was eventually dropped from the label. She had a good working relationship with Missy Elliott. Elliott produced many of her tracks, including "Backstabbers" and "Backstabbers," which was produced by Timbaland.
